What Problems Can Develop Because of Gapped Teeth?

What was once deemed “cute” or “adorable” when you were a child with gapped teeth likely became an aesthetic problem as you grew older. Now as an adult, you may be beginning to notice the serious effects this extra space between your teeth is causing on your oral health and smile, some of which may include

If you want to do something about these gaps and start enjoying a healthier smile, it’s time to consider Invisalign as a safe and effective method of orthodontic treatment.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign uses clear, plastic trays that are custom-made using what is known as SmartTrack technology. This ensures a comfortable fit while gently applying the necessary force to move teeth in the right direction. Taking eight years for Align Technologies, the creators of Invisalign, to research and develop this type of material, it is proven to produce faster results and improve the control of your smile’s movement as it shifts into the appropriate position.

During your initial consultation with Dr. King, she will examine your smile and determine if you are eligible for treatment with Invisalign. If so, she will capture digital impressions of your smile, which will be sent to a lab for technicians to use when creating your custom aligners.

After several weeks, you will return to have your first fitting. Your Invisalign trays will be available for you to take home, and your dentist will provide thorough instructions regarding how long to wear each set and for how long each day. You must remember to remove your aligners before eating or drinking (anything but water), and to clean them every day. But you do not want to use hot water, as this can warp the plastic, damaging your aligner.

It is expected for patients treated with Invisalign to wear their trays for 20-22 hours each day and be prepared to swap out the current set for the next one in the series every 1-2 weeks.

Depending on the severity of your original condition, you can expect to be finished with Invisalign in 12-18 months, and once you are done, you will be required to wear a retainer to ensure the gaps in your smile do not reappear because of teeth shifting back into their original position.
